Record Retention Schedules (RC-2)

Union County, along with every other political subdivision in Ohio, is required to maintain record retention schedules.  Every public department and/or office in the County is mandated to have a Records Retention Schedule (RC-2) that have been approved by the County Records Commission, the Ohio History Connection and the Auditor of State.  Retention periods for records are determined by evaluating the historical, administrative, legal and fiscal value of every record that is “necessary for the adequate and proper documentation of the organization, functions, policies, decisions, procedures, and essential transactions” of the department and/or office.  The courts - Common Pleas, Clerk of Courts, Probate and Juvenile Court - are governed by the Rules of Superintendence for the Courts of Ohio and are therefore not subject to the County Records Commission.  Below is a list of the record retention schedules approved by the Union County Records Commission, special taxing districts subject to the County Records Commission, and by the various court branches.
